What is Bengay Cream and what is it for?
The drug BENGAY cream contains the active substances methylsalicylate 15% and menthol 10%, which belong to the group of local irritants. The active substances of BENGAY cream improve circulation in the skin, lead to heating of the treated area and relieve pain at the application site. BENGAY cream is used to reduce (eliminate) pain caused by joint or muscle inflammation, or muscle stretching, as well as joint dislocation. It is also used to reduce (eliminate) pain in minor sports injuries, when there are no skin injuries.

What should you know before taking Bengay cream?
Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicine, including those that can be obtained without a doctor's prescription, then if you have a chronic disease, a metabolic disorder, are hypersensitive to medicines or have had allergic reactions to some from them.

BENGAY cream should not be used:

  •  If you are allergic to methylsalicylate and other salicylates, menthol or any of the auxiliary substances of this medicine
  •  If you have an open wound, injured or irritated skin
  •  If you are under 12 years old
  •  If you are on oral anticoagulant therapy (warfarin, acenocoumarol) due to the risk of bleeding

When taking BENGAY cream, be especially careful:
Before applying BENGAY, cream, you should contact your doctor if:

  •  you are prone to allergies or have already had an allergic reaction to medicines, especially aspirin
  •  you are pregnant
  •  breastfeed

Warnings:

  • BENGAY, the cream is intended for dermal use only
  • It must not be applied to the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth or genitals
  • Hands should be washed immediately after applying the cream
  • You must not sunbathe the smeared area
  • You must not use large amounts of creams, nor put heated compresses or hot water bottles on the greased area
  • BENGAY cream must not be applied in case of irritation or any other skin damage
  • BENGAY cream contains lanolin which can cause local skin reactions (contact dermatitis).

It is necessary to contact your doctor, if there is no relief of pain during 10 or more days from the beginning of the application of BENGAY cream.

Application of other drugs:
A significant prolongation of the INR was shown in patients who simultaneously took warfarin orally and applied a preparation containing methylsalicylate to the skin.

Administration of BENGAY cream with food or drinks:
Not applicable.

Application of BENGAY cream during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Before you start taking any medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Given that methylsalicylate, the active substance of BENGAY cream, is absorbed through the skin and can have an irritating effect on your baby's central nervous system, especially after applying the product to larger areas of the body, BENGAY cream must not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without consulting a doctor. The doctor will assess whether the benefit of using this preparation is greater than the possible risk for your baby.

The effect of the drug BENGAY, cream on driving motor vehicles and operating machines:
There is no data on the influence of BENGAY cream on the ability to drive motor vehicles and machines.

How is BENGAY cream used?

  • If you think that the medicine BENGAY cream is too weak or too strong for your body, contact your doctor or pharmacist
  • BENGAY cream is intended for external use only
  • BENGAY cream is intended for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age
  • The cream is applied to the skin of the affected area by gentle rubbing; the procedure can be repeated after a few hours (usually 3-4 times a day)
  • Your doctor will advise you how long to take BENGAY cream

If you need other information or have any additional questions about this medicine or your illness, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have taken more BENGAY cream than you should:
If you have taken a larger dose of BENGAY cream than you should, talk to your doctor or pharmacist immediately! They will take the necessary measures and give you appropriate advice.

If you forget to take BENGAY cream:
Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose! Continue using the preparation when you remember or have the opportunity to do so, but with the use of the recommended dose and in the recommended way.

If you suddenly stop taking BENGAY cream:
Not applicable.

Possible side effects:
Like other medicines, BENGAY cream can cause unwanted effects in some people, which are rarely serious. They are mainly manifested at the site of application, as reactions on the skin (eg redness, rash, burning).
In the case of applying a large amount of BENGAY cream, i.e. applying it to large areas of the skin, side effects similar to those that occur after oral administration of menthol-based preparations may occur: nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and symptoms of depression of the central nervous system (headache, unsteady gait , drowsiness, slow breathing and coma). If any side effect becomes serious or you notice any side effect that is not listed in this guide, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.

How to store BENGAY cream?
Keep the medicine BENGAY, the cream out of the reach and sight of children!

The preparation must not be used after the expiration date marked on the package

The medicine is stored at a temperature of up to 25oC, in the original packaging
