Allantoin is a product of protein metabolism in various organisms (bacteria, plants, mammals). The traditional use of comfrey, Symphytum officinale, for wound healing and its long-standing use in cosmetics and pharmacy is based on the presence of allantoin.
There is ample evidence of the effectiveness of allantoin as a cosmetically active substance.
It is a mild keratolytic, humectant, anti-irritant (binds and neutralizes many irritants and sensitizers), causes cell proliferation and stimulates epithelization, accelerates wound healing, alleviates existing and prevents the appearance of new stretch marks. The skin tolerates it very well. It is used for the protection and regeneration of intact skin in case of minor abrasions, burns, burns and irritations.
